Allcott, “Architectural Developments at Montrose in the 1850s,” North Carolina Historical Review 42 (1965) for an account of Graham’s initial contacts with Davis about a more elaborate residence and his decision to build a simpler addition as suggested by his builders. A separate building entry for Alexander Jackson Davis addresses the addition that was never built. The Montrose completed by Conrad and Williams burned in the 1860s.
