The Fayetteville Weekly Observer of November 3, 1887 reported that Kluttz had superintended the construction of the Hotel LaFayette from designs by Richmond architect H. Jackson. As pictured in subsequent issues of the newspaper, it was a 3 1/2 story edifice in ornate Second Empire style with a corner tower. It was either replaced or heavily remodeled in the early 20th century, as indicated in postcards.
