The News and Observer of Raleigh reported on May 25, 1914, that Leitner was architect for the “new Lumberton Hotel” to cost $80,000. Because of financial problems related to World War I in Europe, the Lumberton Hotel Company was unable to construct the proposed 60-room hotel. In 1916 the company contracted for a smaller hotel to have 48 rooms (see Frank B. Simpson’s Lorraine Hotel [The Robesonian, June 22, 1914, Jan. 10, 1916, Aug. 31, 1916]).
