The initial Salem Tavern, one of the first major buildings in Salem, burned in 1784. Much of the foundation and stonework was reused when the tavern was rebuilt as the Salem Tavern (Second)—see Johann Gottlob Krause—employing materials previously assembled for the Single Sisters House but needed instead for the tavern, which hosted visitors and was a mainstay of the community economy.
